Fibre Production

Selecting Hemp Varieties for Fibre Only Applications

Successful and economically sustainable production of hemp solely for fibre applications requires selection of fibre-type varieties that are characterized by high biomass acquisition in the tall stems, typically exceeding 2 metres in height.

Presently, due to a lack of suitable harvesting equipment in Canada, cultivation of fibre type cultivars as a dual purpose crop is impractical as grain combines poorly handle (i.e., wrapping, plugging) large volumes of fibrous material; however, such implements are available in Europe[1]. Emerging fibre processors show tangible interest in having access to high yield and fibre quality cultivars.
